Paint is a custom mix designed and sprayed by shop owner Brent
Jarvis
This 65 Malibu was originally purchased with the intent of building a nice
“Driver” for Brent to drive to and from work in. Well along the way as usual
with cars things changed.
Purchased in the spring of 2002 from the second owner in San Jose
California, The car was shipped to Performance Restorations and was turned
into a 1965 Z16 Resto mod clone. Brent painted it Marina blue and managed
to acquire most all of the Z16 pieces he wanted for the conversion.
Daily driving combined with a need to test new parts lead to a constantly
changing car. With all the fuss about Pro Touring, and the request’s to build
those cars. Brent felt that the only way to build this new breed of Hotrod, the
Pro Touring or G-Machine was to one up the other guys and make his really
perform. After seeing far too many of these cars look good but hardly run the
mission was simple.
The Malibu is a very popular platform. The A Body GM cars ride great and will
perform awesome if you do your home work. Admitantly these cars are real
heavy and far to mush of the weight is in the front. So some testing was in
order.
The Malibu has had 5 engines with different types of cam’s, lifter’s, piston’s,
head’s, intake’s, valve’s, ignition’s, carb’s, compression ratios, 4
transmissions with many different gear ratios tried, 5 different exhaust
combinations, several different suspension setups, including different shocks,
springs, control arms, steering boxes, and sway bars. 6 sets of tires with
several different size diameter and offset wheels have been used. 2 sets of
axels, 3 different brake upgrades, different wheel bearing combos, different
cooling systems were tried and developed with this car. Weight tricks were
successfully attempted. 3 paint jobs, 2 hoods, 3 different interiors, a roll bar
was added, a one of a kind frame reinforcements and triangulations were built.
The car has been driven since its first build in 02 over 60,000 miles. It has
been to the chassis dyno shop several times. It has been to the Drag strip
many times and it also has been road raced extensively.
The end result is a 3625lb Malibu that will pull over 1 G lateral on DOT tires. It
will run mid 11’s on street rubber and mid tens on slicks using only 3 of the 4
gears. It still gets driven to work every day on 93 octane unleaded pump gas.
It is this type of activity and constant thrashing that allows us to build some of
the quickest and fasted, best handling Muscle cars on the planet. The award
winning paint jobs have always been a signature of Brent and his shop so the
Malibu finally got one. Brent mixed up a one of a kind color using a ton of
different pearls to get what you see. The Super Sport stripes have also been
covered with clear and then buried far beneath the surface of clear.
When a customer asks me if a certain product works. I can usually give them
an answer that starts with these very important words “From Experience” here
is what I know.
Enjoy the pics here and keep an eye peeled because this Malibu is being
driven and raced everywhere.
The Shop Test Mule, Brent’s 65 Malibu SS
Check out the rare 160 mph speedo! That was a
costly find. Chevy really did not make a bunch of
spare parts for these cars. The 201 cars were hand
built and that was it. The photo on the right is at Great
lake dragaway.
